Chris Davis will serve as the Orioles' primary third baseman through the end of the season.
"We know Chris can play first base at a high level and have been told by some people who know and have seen him that he's got a chance to be a good third baseman, too," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Monday. "He's got the arm strength and athleticism." Davis, 25, has batted just .250/.308/.367 in 15 games since joining the Orioles. If he can get it together offensively and play adequate defense at the hot corner, he could open the 2012 season as Baltimore's starting third baseman. Mark Reynolds would remain at first.
