Campbell agreed to a contract earlier this month with the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese Central League, ESPN.com's Adam Rubin reports.

After being outrighted off the Mets' 40-man roster on Nov. 2, Campbell likely would have struggled to land anything more than a minor-league deal in free agency had he elected to stay stateside, so he'll head to Japan for what's presumably a greater payday. Campbell demonstrated some nice positional versatility during parts of three seasons with the Mets, but his career .221/.312/.311 batting line over 505 plate appearances prevented him from ever becoming a major contributor at the big-league level.
