Cain is on schedule for his next spring start, but manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that the outing will determine whether he opens the season in the Giants' rotation or on the disabled list, Andrew Baggarly of the Bay Area News Group reports.

Cain had surgery to remove a cyst from his upper right arm in late February, pushing his Cactus League debut to last Friday. In 2.2 innings against the offense-averse Padres, he was less than impressive, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one. The Giants expect Cain to take the mound Monday in a minor league game, after which Bochy will likely have enough information to make a call on the matter.
