Cain (hamstring) tossed 72 pitches during a simulated game Wednesday, Andrew Baggarly of the Bay Area News Group reports.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Cain may need a Triple-A start depending on how he felt after Wednesday's simulated game. If Cain felt good, there is a decent probability that he could start as early as next week, possibly Monday against the Brewers. The 31-year-old completed a bullpen session prior to Sunday's game and has progressed smoothly ever since he was placed on the disabled list on May 28.
