Cain (arm) made his spring training debut Friday after having a cyst surgically removed from his throwing arm. He surrendered three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out one in 2.2 innings against the Padres.
EDGE Analysis
While the results on the stat sheet were poor, the whole point of this outing was to test Cain's arm and get his pitch count up for Opening Day. A stronger showing against a less-than intimidating San Diego lineup would have been reassuring for those hoping for a bounce-back season from Cain, but his value is so low in 2016 (late-round flyer at best) that his stock isn't going to fluctuate much based on tune-up outings in spring. For what it's worth, catcher Buster Posey claimed that he "thought his stuff was good from the bullpen to the game." Cain ended up throwing 53 pitches, which should put him on track to be ready for his regular season debut on April 8.
