Byrd (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola on Wednesday, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. This is surprising, as a lengthy absence was expected after Byrd was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist early this month. However, it seems the Reds are convinced the 37-year-old has healed sufficiently, though it's not entirely clear when he may return to the major league club. When he does, Byrd should immediately take back over as the everyday option in left field after hitting .212 with 10 homers and 25 RBI in his first 47 games of the season.
