Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Phillies "have done background work" on Carlos Quentin. Carlos Beltran is likely headed for San Francisco and the Astros reportedly backed out of a deal that would have sent Hunter Pence to Philadelphia, so now Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is looking at alternatives for the middle of his lineup. Quentin, 28, entered Wednesday's action batting .265/.356/.516 with 20 homers, 62 RBI and an .872 OPS this season. He is making $5 million this season and remains under team control though 2012.
