Bruce Chen turned in an ugly performance against the Cardinals on Saturday, getting hammered for six runs on seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings of work.
Chen didn't walk or strike out a batter in the game. Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina each blasted two-run homers in the second inning, putting Chen in a big hole early on. As most advanced metrics astutely point out, Chen just simply isn't as good of a pitcher as his numbers indicated a season ago, and this regression should have been expected. His nit-picking style of pitching simply doesn't cut it if opposing offenses aren't being aggressive and expanding the zone, and the Cardinals punished him in this one. With the loss, Chen's ERA moves up to a very unremarkable 5.05. He shouldn't be a consideration in all but the deepest of AL-only leagues at this point for his next outing against these same Cardinals at home on Friday.
