Avila (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Avila exited Saturday's game against the Rangers with a tight right hamstring and was moving gingerly around the clubhouse afterward. With the White Sox determining that Avila's mobility was too compromised to play regularly over the next few days, the team decided to stash him on the DL and call up Kevan Smith from Triple-A Charlotte. Smith figures to serve as a lightly-used backup to Dioner Navarro, who will take the reins as the White Sox's primary catcher in the wake of Avila's absence. Avila was batting just .214 while splitting catching duties with Navarro, and now that he's headed to the DL, it may make sense for those that own him in deep leagues to cut him and explore other options.
