Avila singled and launched a solo homer Saturday, but he batted just .176/.304/.235 against left-handed pitching this season, so Tigers manager Jim Leyland won't let him face A's southpaw Tommy Milone. Gerald Laird is catching Doug Fister and batting ninth.
