Ahmed won't require surgery to repair his fractured right wrist and remains optimistic that he'll be able to return from the 60-day disabled list during a potential postseason run, Jarrid Denney of MLB.com reports. "Hopefully I can come off the DL and come back and help the team," Ahmed said Tuesday. "Hopefully we'll be playing in the playoffs and I can come back and help as at that point."
EDGE Analysis
Ahmed has been on the disabled list since late June after he first broke his right hand when he was struck by a 99 mile-per-hour fastball from the Cardinals' Trevor Rosenthal. After an arduous two-month recovery, Ahmed was on track to rejoin the Diamondbacks this week before he was struck by a pitch in the same hand again last Sunday, in what would have been his final rehab game with Triple-A Reno. Fortunately for the shortstop, his latest fracture isn't deemed quite as serious, but he'll still face a six-to-eight-week recovery timeline, putting him on track for a mid-October return at the earliest. With Ahmed out of the picture, Adam Rosales looks secure in his role as the Diamondbacks' top utility infielder for the final month of the regular season.
