According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Angels were engaged in "serious talks" with the Pirates earlier this season about a trade that would have sent outfielder-first baseman Garrett Jones to Anaheim and catcher Jeff Mathis to Pittsburgh. The discussions ultimately fell apart after Pirates' officials decided they couldn't part with Jones' power bat. However, the failed deal does shine a light on each team's area of need. The Pirates are currently relying on a tandem of Michael McKenry and Eric Fryer behind the plate while the Angels are on the market for a left-handed bat to complement rookie slugger Mark Trumbo.
