According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a Cardinals' source downplayed the club's interest in Roy Oswalt as a starter.
Strauss later opined that it could make sense to add Oswalt on a one-year deal as a long reliever with heavy incentives if he is moved to the starting rotation. The 34-year-old right-hander would reportedly love to pitch in St. Louis, but it's probably an unrealistic scenario. He has just 14 career relief appearances (eight of them during his rookie season in 2001) and pitching out of the bullpen might not be the best idea for his back condition. Unless the Cardinals can shed Jake Westbrook or Kyle Lohse (both of whom have no-trade clauses), Oswalt will likely find a better situation elsewhere.
