Whitlock is feeling better after landing on the injured list earlier in the week with a right pectoral strain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Alex Cora previously indicated that he expected Whitlock to return by the end of the regular season, and Friday's update suggests that's still in play. The right-hander has yet to resume throwing, but so long as he's able to do so in the next few days, he should remain on track to be activated during the closing four-game stretch against the Orioles and Nationals.

Whitlock (pectoral) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Per Bill Koch of The Providence Journal, manager Alex Cora maintained that the pectoral injury isn't thought to be serious, but that they "don't feel he's going to be ready in the upcoming days." The move to the IL can be backdated to Monday, so Whitlock will become eligible to be reinstated Sept. 30 against Baltimore. If he progresses as hopes, the right-hander stands a strong chance to rejoin the Boston bullpen for the last four games of the regular season. Ryan Brasier was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take his spot on the 28-man roster.

Whitlock's pectoral strain is a minor one but could still send him to the injured list, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Whitlock left Sunday's game against Oakland with what was originally described as right pectoral tightness. It turns out that he's dealing with a strain, but he could still potentially avoid a trip to the injured list. If he doesn't wind up being so lucky, however, he'll only be eligible to return for the final four days of the regular season.

Whitlock was removed from Sunday's game against the Orioles with right pectoral tightness, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Whitlock delivered a scoreless sixth inning and returned for the seventh, but he quickly exited with an athletic trainer due to the injury. Overall he was charged with an earned run on a hit and a walk with zero strikeouts. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but the 25-year-old will have Monday's scheduled off day to aid in his recovery before potentially missing additional time.

Whitlock (8-4) allowed one run on one hit while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the White Sox on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Whitlock came in to try and extend the game to extra innings after the Red Sox tied it up in the top of the ninth but was unable to do so. The 25-year-old struck out the first two batters he faced before Leury Garcia connected on an 0-2 fastball and sent it over the wall in center field to walk it off for the White Sox. Whitlock has now given up at least a run in three of his last four outings but still has been pretty effective overall. He has a 1.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 78:16 K:BB over 70.1 innings to go along with two saves and 13 holds. The Red Sox clearly trust him in high-leverage situations and should continue to use him in those situations during the final stretch of the regular season.

Whitlock (8-3) allowed one hit and one walk over two scoreless innings to pick up the win over the White Sox on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
Whitlock bounced back after being part of a spectacular meltdown by the Red Sox five days earlier. Saturday's game took on a similar feel -- Boston jumped to a big lead early, only to let the opponent back in with shoddy fielding and suspect relief pitching -- but Whitlock prevented any late damage in this one. Despite some recent hiccups, Whitlock is viewed as a key piece to Boston's late-game strategy.

Whitlock (7-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings to pick up a blown save and a loss against the Rays on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Whitlock was called on to close out the game with Boston up, 9-8, in the top of the ninth, but Austin Meadows' inside-the-park home run forced extra frames. It was a tough-luck situation for Whitlock, who watched the entire outfield misplay Meadows' smash off the wall. Another error in the 10th inning led to a run and earned him the loss. Whitlock has been good for Boston and should continue to work high-leverage spots along with Adam Ottavino, while the team gets a handle on its COVID-19 outbreak. Matt Barnes, the team's nominal closer who was also caught up in the outbreak, slipped dramatically before landing on the COVID-19 list, posting a 15.88 ERA over 10 August outings.

Whitlock allowed a run on three hits and struck out two in 1.1 innings to earn the save in Friday's 8-5 win over Cleveland.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander was able to get out of trouble in relief of Ryan Brasier in the eighth inning. Whitlock then ran into some trouble of his own in the ninth, but he was able to keep the lead for his second save of the season. While he's allowed six runs (five earned) across his last 12.1 innings, Whitlock remains a reliable high-leverage arm for Boston. He has a 1.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 74:15 K:BB and 13 holds through 66.1 innings overall.

Whitlock (6-2) earned the win Saturday against Cleveland after pitching a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.
EDGE Analysis
Whitlock had the tough task to pitch the ninth in a tied game, but he was efficient since he needed just 14 pitches (10 strikes) to get the job done and earn his sixth win of the season. The right-hander has had some less-than-impressive efforts in two bullpen games this month, but he's been excellent most of the time and owns a blistering 1.57 ERA on the season. Plus, he has allowed just five earned runs across 25 innings (16 appearances) from July onwards.

Whitlock (5-2) allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out four over 2.2 innings to pick up the win in extra innings over Texas on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Whitlock bailed out the Red Sox with one out in the ninth inning, after closer Matt Barnes made a mess of a save situation in support of starter Nathan Eovaldi. After getting out of the ninth with the score tied, Whitlock allowed the automatic runner to score in the top of the 10th inning, but the Red Sox evened it in the bottom half of the inning before sealing the win with a walkoff grand slam in the 11th. Outside of a pair of games against Rays and Yankees earlier this month, Whitlock has been exceptional out of Boston's bullpen.
