Fernando Salas (shoulder) played catch Thursday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list. Salas has been sidelined since May 20 due to right shoulder irritation. It sounds like the cortisone shot has done its job, but we should know more as he continues to build his workload.

Fernando Salas received a shot Thursday to help the inflammation in his right shoulder. Salas doesn't have any structural damage, but the Cardinals will shut him down for a while and hope the shot helps to speed his recovery along. There's no timetable for his return.

Cardinals placed RHP Fernando Salas on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21, with right shoulder irritation. The severity of the injury isn't yet known, but the move clears a spot for Wednesday's starter, Tyler Lyons. Rookie right-hander Carlos Martinez could see an increased role during Salas' absence.

Fernando Salas served up a game-winning home run to Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy on Sunday in St. Louis. The 10th-inning shot sailed into the left field bleachers at Busch Stadium and cost the Cardinals a chance at a three-game series sweep. Salas would probably be in line for save chances right now if he was pitching at all competently. He owns an 8.31 ERA in 4 1/3 innings.

According to MLB.com, an illness during spring training may have impacted Fernando Salas this season. Salas recently passed a kidney stone. It wasn't previously known he was dealing with such an issue and could partly explain his early season struggles. Since his demotion, Salas has made four appearances, and has given up four earned runs and six hits in four innings.

Cardinals optioned Fernando Salas to Triple-A Memphis. Salas has struggled with his mechanics this year and will take his 6.32 ERA to the minors. He'll likely be back with the Cardinals in short order should Chuckie Fick struggle or an injury occur. Fick has a 3.24 ERA in parts of six seasons in the minors

Fernando Salas has allowed 18 hits and eight earned runs through 11 1/3 innings this season. Salas was a highly effective closer then setup man last season for the Cards, registering a 2.28 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 24 saves in 75 innings. But he has struggled with his mechanics this year and currently sports a 6.35 ERA through 14 appearances. In slightly related news, Jason Motte has more job security than ever.
