By almost every account, this was Cease's worst outing of the season. He logged his shortest start to date -- previously, he had completed at least four innings in each of his 22 appearances -- and tied a season-worst mark with the seven runs he allowed. Cease also recorded his lowest strikeout total of the season with the single punchout he was able to muster. The right-hander served up a two-run homer to Corey Seager in the first inning, but his demise was the second, when he allowed five runs on three singles, a double and three walks. The poor outing pushed Cease's season ERA to 4.61, which is on pace to be his worst mark since his rookie 2019 campaign.

Cease (4-4) took the loss Thursday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against Cleveland. He struck out five.

Cease's final line certainly could've been uglier as he surrendered nine hits, including four for extra bases. Still, it was a tough outing for the 27-year-old right-hander after he allowed just two runs over his previous two starts (11 innings). Cease now sports a 4.15 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and 143:49 K:BB across 22 starts (119.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against Texas.

It was a strong bounce-back performance from Cease against a powerful Atlanta lineup after he allowed five runs on 11 hits to the Cardinals in his last start before the All-Star break. Overall, the 27-year-old right-hander has been solid of late, allowing two runs or fewer in six of his previous eight outings. Cease lowered his ERA to 4.18 with a 1.34 WHIP and 129:45 K:BB across 15 starts (81.1 innings) this season. He's tentatively lined up to face the Twins on the road in his next start.

While his command and control have been shaky at times throughout the season, Cease has posted an impressive 23:3 K:BB over his last three starts. His ERA jumped to 4.30 alongside a 123:42 K:BB across 102.2 frames.

EDGE Analysis

Cease had struck out at least nine batters in three straight games coming into Saturday, but he punched out just five against Oakland. The right-hander entered the sixth inning with a one-run lead, but he was pulled after giving up a one-out triple followed by a double that tied the score. Cease logged his seventh straight no-decision, though he's pitched well with a 3.32 ERA and 55:17 K:BB over 38 innings during that span.

Cease did not factor in the decision against the Angels on Monday, allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters over six innings.

EDGE Analysis

Cease racked up an impressive 17 swinging strikes en route to his second 10-punchout performance over his past three starts, but Angels starter Reid Detmers matched him in both whiffs and strikeouts, and neither hurler factored in the decision. For Cease, the outing was the culmination of a strong June during which he has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his five starts, compiling a 2.20 ERA and 42:10 K:BB across 28.2 frames over that stretch. Cease turned in another impressive outing Tuesday, marking his fourth straight appearance allowing two or fewer runs. Over that stretch, Cease owns a 2.38 ERA with a 32:10 K:BB and 15 hits allowed across 22.2 innings. Cease's nine strikeouts also moved him into a tie for the ninth most strikeouts in MLB. The White Sox ace is tentatively scheduled to make his next start during a three-game home series against Boston.

For five innings Cease looked every bit the pitcher who finished second in AL Cy Young voting last season, giving up just two hits while punching out nine batters. However, the right-hander was lifted after giving up two singles around another strikeout in the sixth, and both runners came around to score when reliever Reynaldo Lopez surrendered a game-tying grand slam to Chris Taylor. That prevented Cease from getting the win, but he nonetheless continued his nice turnaround in June. Through three starts this month, Cease has posted a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB over 16.2 frames.
