Smyly (1-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits across 4.1 innings to take the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Dodgers. He walked two and struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Clayton Kershaw and two Los Angeles relievers combined to shut out Chicago, so Smyly had no margin for error as he picked up his third loss of the season versus only one win. Despite the poor record, the lefty has actually pitched pretty well with a 3.04 ERA, but the 9-17 Cubs are struggling to win any ballgames these days. Smyly will look for a better outcome in his next scheduled start Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Smyly (personal) was activated from the bereavement list prior to Saturday's start against the Dodgers, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smyly had been away from the team since Tuesday, but he'll start the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The southpaw is officially serving as the 27th man for the twin bill but should remain in the rotation following Saturday's outing.

Smyly (personal) and the Cubs won't play Friday against the Dodgers after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smyly was a potential starter for Friday's matchup after spending time on the bereavement list, but the game ultimately won't be played. The southpaw will take the mound in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, while Daniel Norris will start in the nightcap, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Smyly was placed on the bereavement list Tuesday and won't make his scheduled start against the White Sox, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
EDGE Analysis
Players may spend between three and seven days on the bereavement list, meaning Smyly should return either late this week or early next week. Scott Effross will make a spot start in his place Tuesday.

Smyly (1-2) allowed two runs on five hits across 4.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against Atlanta. He walked one and struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Two solo home runs accounted for all the offense against Smyly as he fell to the team he played for last season. The lefty is now sitting at 1-2 but has pitched well with a 2.79 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across his first four starts. Smyly isn't a huge strikeout guy, with 13 so far across 19.1 innings, but he'll have some fantasy value as long as he keeps his ERA and WHIP down. The veteran lines up to face the White Sox on Wednesday in his next scheduled start.

Smyly (1-1) was charged with the loss Friday against the Pirates after allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk across five innings.
EDGE Analysis
The left-hander gave up two runs on two hits and a walk during the second inning, and Michael Chavis and Roberto Perez tacked on solo homers in the fourth and fifth frames. Smyly delivered 9.2 scoreless innings across his first two starts of 2022 but was bit Friday by Pittsburgh. He'll carry a 2.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB into his next start, which projects for Thursday in Atlanta.

Smyly didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Rockies after allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four across 4.2 scoreless innings.
EDGE Analysis
Smyly joined the Cubs in mid-March and found his way into the rotation due to several injuries, but he's done enough through his first two starts to believe he could earn a regular spot for the remainder of the season. He's yet to allow a run through 9.2 innings, allowing seven hits and posting a strong 5:1 K:BB. His next start is scheduled for Friday at home against the Pirates.

Smyly (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Pirates. He allowed three hits and struck out one.
EDGE Analysis
It was an excellent team debut for Smyly, who didn't join the Cubs until March 19. The veteran lefty has had some success before, including his respectable 4.48 ERA across 23 starts with Atlanta last season. Chicago is currently without Alec Mills (back), Wade Miley (elbow) and Adbert Alzolay (lat), so Smyly should be entrenched in the rotation for now, and he could stick there all year if he pitches well. He's currently slated to start again Sunday against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Cubs manager David Ross confirmed Tuesday that Smyly will make his first start of the regular season Sunday against the Brewers in Chicago, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Even though he didn't sign with the Cubs until March 19, Smyly advanced far enough along in his throwing program to be included in the team's Opening Day rotation. He'll start the final contest of the Cubs' four-game season-opening series in Milwaukee, with the lefty's placement of fourth in the pitching schedule allowing Chicago to break up right-handers Marcus Stroman and Alec Mills. Stroman will start Saturday, while Mills will get his first turn next week in Pittsburgh.

Smyly has been told he'll be a starter for the Cubs to begin the season, Jordan Bastian of MLB,com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smyly worked as a starter and as a reliever at times for Atlanta last season, but the Cubs will need the lefty to start with Adbert Alzolay (lat) and Wade Miley (elbow) currently out. The eventual return of those two injured pitchers could push Smyly into a long-relief role, though the veteran could stick in the rotation if he pitches well early in the year.
