Roach was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Friday, Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports. Roach was claimed off waivers by the Cubs earlier in the offseason. In 16 games with the Padres last season, he posted a 4.75 ERA and 1.68 WHIP with 17 strikeouts in 30.1 innings. He will likely end up in the minors if he goes unclaimed through waivers.

Overall, he allowed four hits and two walks without recording a strikeout in his first major league start. Despite contributing out of the Padres' bullpen, Roach has plenty of minor league experience as a starter. It remains to be seen if he'll be the Padres' go-to option again with Andrew Cashner on the disabled list.

Padres purchased the contract of RHP Donn Roach from Double-A San Antonio. Roach made 28 starts for San Antonio this season, posting a 3.53 ERA over 142 2/3 innings of work. The move was made to protect the 23-year-old from December's Rule 5 Draft.

The 22-year-old right-hander has logged time as both a starter and reliever, but he had an impressive 2.16 ERA and 29/3 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings over his first five starts with High-A Inland Empire this season. He's expected to report to High-A Lake Elsinore.
