German was suspended 10 games by Major League Baseball on Wednesday for violating the league's foreign substance policy, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
He was given an undisclosed fine, as well. German was ejected from Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays after three innings after umpires found what they believe was a foreign substance on his right hand. The pitcher will not appeal and will begin serving the suspension immediately, so he'll be eligible to return May 28.

German was ejected from Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays after he was found to have a foreign substance on his hand, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. He allowed no runs over three innings with two strikeouts before the ejection.
EDGE Analysis
German will be facing a 10-game suspension -- pending appeal -- after being removed from the game before the start of the fourth inning. Ian Hamilton has taken over for German on the mound. This is not the first time that there's been controversy involving German and substances, as the right-hander was checked twice in a start against the Twins in the middle of April. Assuming the suspension is upheld, the Yankees will need to make a change to their rotation over the weekend.

German (2-3) took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
German pitched well, but his teammates couldn't help him out. An Anthony Rizzo error led to the Rays' first run of the game. Ron Marinaccio came on in relief of German with two outs and a runner on first and allowed three runs to score before picking up an out. Plus the Yankees offense failed to score until the ninth inning. German has surrendered just four earned runs over his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 5.54 to 4.00.

German allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings against Tampa Bay on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision.
EDGE Analysis
German started the outing on a rough note, yielding a hit to each of the first two batters he faced and giving up a pair of runs in the first inning. After that, he held Tampa's potent lineup mostly in check, allowing just one more hit and no more runs. German didn't get the offensive support he needed to pick up the win, but a late Yankees rally resulted in the Rays' seventh loss of the season. The right-hander has given up two or fewer runs in four of his seven appearances this season, and overall he has a 4.35 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 44:12 K:BB across 39.1 innings.

German did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over 8.1 innings during a 3-2 loss to the Guardians. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
After a one-out single by Amed Rosario in the first, German retired 11 straight batters before walking Josh Bell to begin the fifth. Following the walk, the right-hander got back on track and recorded 13 straight outs before Steven Kwan singled with one out in the ninth. German, who had thrown 88 pitches (65 strikes), was pulled following the base hit, but Clay Holmes couldn't maintain the shutout and ultimately surrendered the game-tying hit to Josh Naylor. It was the first time this season German took a game into the ninth and fifth time he's recorded at least six strikeouts. His 4.46 ERA still needs work, but his 0.90 WHIP and 39:10 K:BB through 34.1 innings suggests he's on the right track and may have been a victim of some bad luck to start the campaign. German will look to build off his dominating performance during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to occur during a four-game set versus the Rays this coming weekend.

German (2-2) earned the win Wednesday, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks over six innings in a 12-6 victory over Minnesota. He struck out eight.
EDGE Analysis
German was gifted with double-digit run support, so he fired a ton of strikes (60 of 84 pitches) and surrendered three home runs. The long ball continues to be an issue for the right-hander, who's now allowed seven through his first five starts. Despite giving up a season-high six earned runs Wednesday, the right-hander completed six innings for a third straight outing and picked up his second win. German's 5.54 ERA isn't great, but he has a stellar 33:9 K:BB through 26 innings thus far.

German (1-2) took the loss Friday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over six innings against Toronto. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
German served up a two-run home run to Vladimir Guerrero in the first and a two-run shot to Brandon Belt in the sixth. The right-hander has now given up four homers in four starts and sports a 4.50 ERA, but he has a stellar 25:7 K:BB through 20 innings and his 1.05 WHIP is encouraging. His next start is tentatively scheduled against the Twins, who struck out 11 times the last time they faced German.

German (1-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 6-1 victory over the Twins, allowing one run on three hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out 11 batters and walked none.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander was absolutely dominant in his best performance yet in 2023, as German generated 18 swinging strikes among his 78 pitches. There was a bit of a dark cloud hanging over the outing however, as he was checked twice for foreign substances, only for the umpires to determine they couldn't find anything actionable. Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli got ejected for disputing that decision. German sports a 3.86 ERA and 19:5 K:BB through three starts and 14 innings, but he lines up for a tough test in his next trip to the mound, which is likely to come at home next weekend against the Blue Jays.

German did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on two hits and five walks over three innings against Cleveland. He struck out zero.
EDGE Analysis
German's outing didn't last long after he racked up 87 pitches in just three innings of work. The right-hander got knocked around in the second and fourth frames, surrendering a run in each innings. German threw only 49 of his 87 pitches for strikes and walked five after failing to issue a walk in his first start of the season.

German (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Yankees fell 4-1 to the Phillies, giving up four runs on four hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter.
EDGE Analysis
The strikeouts were impressive and German generated 15 swinging strikes among his 75 pitches, but homers by Kyle Schwarber and Brandon Marsh -- as well as a lack of run support -- stuck the right-hander with the loss. It's still an encouraging first outing of the season, and German will look to build on it in his next start, likely to come this weekend in Baltimore.
