Lugo was summoned to the big club to offer additional infield depth while Jeimer Candelario (wrist), who was sent to the disabled list in a corresponding move, is sidelined. The 23-year-old prospect is hitting .284/.287/.369 through 33 games with the Mud Hens. While he'll likely head back to the minors once Candelario is healthy again, he could see some reps at third base in the meantime.

Lugo recorded a season-high three hits and three runs for Triple-A Toledo in its 10-7 loss to Indianapolis on Monday.

The 23-year-old is up to 29 hits for the season, good for second place in the International League. While Lugo's bat-to-ball skills have been solid enough, his inability to draw walks, hit for power or make a major impact on the bases puts a major damper on his fantasy outlook. Lugo's inability to work counts is particularly troubling, as he has manged just one walk in 100 plate appearances this season.

Now that Lugo is in minor-league camp, he's undergoing treatment for the injuries before returning to game action. It's unclear exactly what that entails, but it doesn't seem to be anything serious given he played through it already.

This isn't all too surprising, as Lugo hasn't appeared in a game above Double-A and was always expected to open the year in the minors. The 23-year-old, who was acquired from the Diamondbacks in the J.D. Martinez trade last year, hit a combined .277/.321/.424 in 131 games between Double-A Jackson (Arizona) and Double-A Erie (Detroit). With Jeimer Candelario lined up as the Tigers' third baseman of the future, Lugo could be moved back to shortstop this season, which would certainly help his dynasty league stock given his bat profiles better in the middle infield long term.

Lugo was traded to the Tigers on Tuesday along with Sergio Alcantara and Jose King in exchange for J.D. Martinez.

EDGE Analysis

Lugo played much more at third base with Double-A Jackson this season (77 games) than shortstop (10 games), and that doesn't bode particularly well for his dynasty league stock, although it's possible the Tigers will move him back to short. His bat would certainly profile better there long term, as Lugo has shown only modest pop throughout his minor-league career. He was batting .282/.325/.428 with seven homers with Jackson.

Lugo, 22, has compiled a .283/.326/.432 batting line to go with seven home runs and 20 doubles across 356 plate appearances with Double-A Jackson on the season.

EDGE Analysis

The third baseman has been solid all season for Jackson, but has caught fire in July, turning in two-hit performances in five of his last seven starts. Lugo lacks the standout tool that would potentially make him a notable performer once he ascends to the majors, but his bat-to-ball ability and burgeoning pop could give him a shot to develop into something more than a utility player over the long haul.

Lugo, 22, is slashing .321/.333/.571 with four homers and 12 RBI across 56 at-bats with Double-A Jackson.

EDGE Analysis

Through his first 12 games of the season, Lugo has shown that the power gains he displayed between the High-A and Double-A levels in 2016 are here to stay, as six of his 18 hits have gone for extra bases. However, Lugo has yet to draw a walk on the season, and that lack of plate discipline has been a black mark on his resume throughout his minor-league career. As he faces more advanced pitching in the upper minors, Lugo's burgeoning power and contact-hitting skills may not shine quite as brightly if he fails to show a better eye at the dish.

Lugo was added to Arizona's 40-man roster on Friday.

The Diamondbacks unsurprisingly opted to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Lugo hit 17 home runs and hit .311 across stops at High-A and Double-A last year, showcasing average game power and strong bat to ball skills. However, his unwillingness to take walks and lack of defensive utility cloud his outlook. That said, Arizona has the worst farm system in baseball, so Lugo could end up getting some chances to get his bat into games at the big league level in a year or two.
