Peterson (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings as he was charged with the loss Sunday against the Braves.
EDGE Analysis
Peterson was relatively effective in his second MLB start, but the Mets were unable to generate any offensive production, resulting in a loss for the southpaw. Despite Sunday's decision, Peterson has held his own over his first taste of major-league action, posting a 3.86 ERA and 11:3 K:BB over 11.2 innings to begin the year. His next start should come at home Saturday against the Marlins.

Peterson (1-0) picked up the win in Tuesday's 8-3 victory over the Red Sox, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
The 24-year-old southpaw looked like a veteran on the mound in his big-league debut, working out of trouble in the third inning by fanning J.D. Martinez and mostly cruising from there. Peterson figures to hold down a rotation spot at least until Marcus Stroman (calf) gets healthy, but if he continues to perform at a reasonably high level he could stick around beyond that.

The Mets officially selected Peterson's contract from their alternate training site Tuesday in advance of his scheduled start against the Red Sox.
EDGE Analysis
New York designated Ty Bashlor for assignment to clear spots on the 40-man roster and 30-man active roster for the 24-year-old southpaw. Peterson whiffed 24.5 percent of the batters he faced at the Double-A level in 2019 and excelled at generating groundballs, but the latter attribute could contribute to an inflated WHIP in the majors, especially with a shaky Mets defense behind him.

Peterson will be called up to start against the Red Sox on Tuesday for his major-league debut, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
EDGE Analysis
Peterson is at least a moderately interesting prospect, with a back-end starter profile driven by command and groundballs. He did manage to strike out a solid 24.5 percent of opposing batters in 24 Double-A starts last season, though he sits around 90 mph with his fastball and may not strike out too many hitters at the big-league level. He was hardly dominant at Double-A Binghamton last year, either, posting a modest 4.19 ERA, so expectations shouldn't be too high as he makes the jump to the majors for his first career start.

Peterson could be added to the 30-man roster in order to make a spot start or serve as a bulk reliever Tuesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Mets' pitching depth is already being tested, as Rick Porcello's short outing Sunday forced Corey Oswalt to throw over 70 pitches in relief and took him out of the picture for Tuesday's start. Peterson and Erasmo Ramirez -- or perhaps even both of them -- are the most likely candidates to get the call to soak up some innings, but as neither of them are currently on the 40-man roster, the club could also elect to try and piece together a pure bullpen game instead.

Peterson tossed 2.1 scoreless innings during Wednesday's intrasquad scrimmage, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The young southpaw struck out Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo during the outing. With Jacob deGrom (back) now iffy for Opening Day, Peterson could begin the season in the Mets rotation. "I'm ready when that call comes in," Peterson said after the scrimmage.

Peterson is expected to be the Mets' first depth option in the rotation should one of the team's five starters miss time, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Not only would Peterson be the likely replacement this season if one of Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Rick Porcello, Steven Matz or Michael Wacha miss time, but he is also poised to be a part of the 2021 rotation, with Noah Sydergaard (elbow) expected to miss the first couple months and Stroman, Porcello and Wacha set to be free agents after this season. Peterson is often tabbed as a future back-end starter, but he has good command of a quality three-pitch mix and is excellent at generating groundballs, so he could outperform expectations. He has never pitched above Double-A, however, so it would be unwise to expect him to have success right away if he is forced into action this season.

Peterson has been added to the Mets' 60-man player pool, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
While New York's five-man rotation is set, Peterson figures to be one of the team's main options to fill in or get a spot start when the rest of the staff needs additional rest. The 24-year-old southpaw posted a 4.19 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 122:37 K:BB in 116 innings for Double-A Binghamton last season.

Peterson is a likely beneficiary if big-league teams are allowed to use expanded rosters to accommodate a shortened or compacted schedule, Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Proposals have been floated that would see a 29-man roster in MLB for at least the first month of a shortened season. In that scenario, Peterson -- who was often referred to as the Mets' "seventh starter" in camp by manager Luis Rojas, before Noah Syndergaard (elbow) was lost for the season -- would be the logical candidate to join the big-league squad and provide extra rotation depth. The 24-year-old southpaw was a first-round pick in 2017 and posted a strong 122:37 K:BB over 116 innings at Double-A last year.

The injury to Noah Syndergaard (elbow) could open up a role for Peterson later in the season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Luis Rojas called Peterson the team's seventh starter earlier in spring training, and he may have a greater opportunity to reach the big leagues in 2020 in light of Syndergaard undergoing Tommy John surgery. After posting a 4.19 ERA and 122:37 K:BB across 116 innings with Double-A Binghamton in 2019, Peterson flashed increased velocity in spring training. Having already been optioned to minor-league camp, it's likely that Peterson will begin the season with Triple-A Syracuse.
