The Pirates recalled Moreta from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

Moreta was sent out to the minors to clear room on 26-man active roster for right-hander Luis Ortiz, who was recalled from Triple-A ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Cardinals. The demotion comes after Moreta was touched up for two earned runs on three hits and one walk in 1.2 innings of relief in Tuesday's 6-3 win over St. Louis.

The Pirates reinstated Moreta (back) from the 15-day injured list Sunday.

Moreta received the green light to rejoin Pittsburgh after striking out two over a scoreless inning in his lone rehab appearance Thursday with Triple-A Indianapolis. Prior to landing on the IL on Aug. 4 with lower-back soreness, Moreta had notched four wins, one save and four holds over 48.1 innings out of the Pittsburgh bullpen while pitching to a 4.10 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 63:22 K:BB. He should step back into a key setup role in front of closer David Bednar.

Moreta (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

Moreta was placed on the IL on Aug. 4 due to soreness in his lower-back, and Friday will mark the beginning of the final stage in his recovery process. The Pirates haven't indicated how long they plan on keeping Moreta in the minors, but it's possible he returns ahead of their next homestand Monday.

Moreta allowed zero hits and zero walks while striking out three over 1.1 scoreless innings Friday against the Angels.

EDGE Analysis

Following a rough June that saw him allow 10 runs over 10 innings, Moreta has allowed only one run with a 0.72 WHIP and 13 strikeouts through 8.1 July innings. While currently holding a middle-relief role in Pittsburgh, continued impactful outings could lead to a rise in role if the Pirates trade away closer David Bednar and/or setup man Colin Holderman continues to struggle.

Moreta (1-1) took the loss Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He allowed an unearned run on a hit while striking out one over one-third of an inning.

EDGE Analysis

Moreta replaced Roansy Contreras to start the sixth inning, striking out Corbin Carroll before Christian Walker reached on a Ke'Bryan Hayes throwing error. Walker would score on Lourdes Gurriel's base hit, giving Arizona a 4-3 lead and eventually handing Moreta his first loss. Overall, the 27-year-old Moreta has been excellent for Pittsburgh. He still hasn't allowed an earned run since April 26, a span of 10.2 innings. He sports a 2.14 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB across 21 innings this season.

Moreta picked up the save in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Cardinals in 10 innings, walking one and striking out one in a scoreless inning.

EDGE Analysis

Moreta was tasked with getting the save after David Bednar worked the ninth inning against the Cardinals, and he got the job done. It's the first save of the season for Moreta in eight appearances. As long as Bednar is on the roster, it's unlikely Moreta will see many more save chances.

The Reds traded Moreta to the Pirates on Friday in exchange for infielder Kevin Newman.

EDGE Analysis

Moreta was on the shuttle between Triple-A and the majors throughout last season, making 35 appearances for the big-league team (one start) and another 28 for Louisville. The 26-year-old right-hander averaged 96 mph with his fastball in the majors last season and can pull the string with the slider and changeup around 85-88 mph.

Moreta was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

Moreta was called up by the Reds last week and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six in 4.2 innings over three appearances during his time in the majors. However, he'll head back to Louisville after Graham Ashcraft (biceps) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list.

Moreta was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.

EDGE Analysis

Moreta has made five major-league appearances since the All-Star break and has allowed three hits and two walks while striking out four in seven innings. He served as the 29th man during a doubleheader against the Rockies on Sept. 5 but will rejoin the big-league bullpen as part of a move after Luke Farrell was designated for assignment.
