Spangenberg was recalled from Triple-A El-Paso on Saturday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.
EDGE Analysis
Spangenberg was hitting just .196/.237/.357 for the Padres before being sent to the minors in late April. He fared much better in Triple-A, posting a .293/.328/.534 line over 13 games. He'll replace Chase Headley, who was designated for a assignment.

Spangenberg was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Spangenberg logged time at second base, third base and in left field, but his positional versatility wasn't enough to overcome his lowly .196 batting average in 56 at-bats. He'll head back to the minors to get back on track at the plate, allowing Eric Hosmer to return from the family medical leave list in a corresponding move.

Spangenberg started in left field and went 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and a pair of runs scored in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
With the Padres' starting outfield banged up, Spangenberg was called upon to start against the right-handed Tyler Beede. The 27-year-old began the year in a backup role, but he has now started four of San Diego's last five contests. Two lefties are on the docket for Monday and Tuesday, so Spangenberg is likely to retreat to the bench in favor of Hunter Renfroe, but he should log starts against righties in the interim until either Manuel Margot (ribs) or Wil Myers (arm) return.

Spangenberg went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and reached base on a hit by pitch in Friday's 8-6 loss to the Brewers.
EDGE Analysis
Though Carlos Asuaje garnered the Opening Day nod at the keystone, Spangenberg's entry into the lineup a day later against a right-handed starter (Jhoulys Chacin) suggests that both second baseman could be in store for at least semi-regular at-bats. After submitting a double-digit home run and steal campaign in 2017, Spangenberg seemingly has the greater fantasy upside of the two, though his higher strikeout rate probably makes him more of a batting-average risk than Asuaje.

Spangenberg may fall short of winning the Padres' second base gig due to defensive capabilities, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Spangenberg has put together a solid spring (.275/.341/.600), and even though he is trailing Carlos Asuaje in production (.347/.377/.653), the latter's premier defense may be what decides who wins the starting job. The 27-year-old projects as the better fantasy asset after reaching double-digit home runs and steals while bouncing all over the field in 129 games last season, but a backup job (or start in the minors) would certainly wipe out most of his value. No official decision has been made, but Asuaje appears to be the leader in the clubhouse as we near Opening Day.

Spangenberg (wrist) returned to action Saturday, going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in a spring training win over Oakland.
EDGE Analysis
The utility man had missed some time after jamming his wrist in his spring debut back on Feb. 24. The fact that he was able to go yard bodes well for the health of his wrist. Spangenberg had somewhat of a breakout season in 2017 with 13 homers and 11 steals over 444 at-bats while seeing time all over the diamond, but primarily at the hot corner. With Chase Headley returning to San Diego, the 26-year-old is locked in position battle with Carlos Asuaje for the starting second base gig. While neither player will generate much fantasy buzz in standard formats, Spangenberg's double-digit power/speed combo would certainly be the more fantasy-friendly asset for deeper leagues should he come out victorious this spring.

Spangenberg jammed his wrist over the weekend and won't play in games for a bit, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
It's unclear exactly how the injury came to be, but it doesn't seem like an issue that will keep him out of commission for too long. However, wrist injuries can be troublesome for hitters if they linger, so this situation is worth monitoring over the course of spring training. Consider Spangenberg day-to-day for the time being with the expectation of a return within the next week or two.

Padres manager Andy Green said that Spangenberg will battle Carlos Asuaje for the everyday role at second base in spring training
EDGE Analysis
Playing time was plentiful for both Asuaje and Spangenberg in the second half of last season while the latter logged most of his appearances at the hot corner, but the Padres' offseason pickup of Chase Headley appears to have closed an avenue to everyday at-bats at third base. With 13 home runs and 11 steals in less than 500 plate appearances last season, Spangenberg was a more fantasy-friendly option than Asauje, though the 26-year-old's inferior plate discipline occasionally made him more slump-prone. No matter who ends up coming away with the primary gig at the keystone, there's a decent chance Spangenberg and Asuaje are on the bench versus same-handed pitching after both sported sub-.200 averages against lefties last season. The versatile Jose Pirela could be the main beneficiary of added playing time at second base in those scenarios.

Spangenberg agreed to a one-year deal with the Padres on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
EDGE Analysis
The terms of the deal were not made available by the team. This was Spangenberg's first offseason as an arbitration-eligible player. The recent trade of Yangervis Solarte to Toronto should allow Spangenberg to see slightly more playing time this season, but he is still not a lock to see regular at-bats. He will compete with Carlos Asuaje for starts at second base, while top prospect Luis Urias could take over the everyday job at the keystone sometime this summer. Spangenberg enters his age-27 season after hitting 13 home runs with 11 steals and a .264 average in 486 plate appearances in 2017.

Spangenberg is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Padres are sending out a right-handed heavy lineup with southpaw Rich Hill on the mound for the Dodgers, so Spangenberg will head to the bench for a second straight game. In his place, Christian Villanueva will start at third base and bat fifth.
