Carroll went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple, two stolen bases and two runs scored in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to Kansas City.

Carroll already has 10 stolen bases in 25 games, second in MLB behind only Atlanta's Ronald Acuna (13). It was the third time he's recorded multiple steals in a game. Carroll, who started the season in the bottom half of Arizona's order, has been entrenched at the third spot and thrived over the last seven games, going 11-for-27 (.407) with five walks, four steals and six runs scored. Ironically for a batter in the three hole, Carroll doesn't have an RBI during that stretch.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Carroll is simply getting the night off Tuesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

An incorrect initial lineup was sent out, raising concerns that Carroll had been scratched, but Lovullo explained later that this had always been a planned day of rest for the dynamic young outfielder. Alek Thomas is covering center field and batting ninth Tuesday against the Cardinals.

The home run was the fourth of the season for Carroll, who carries a four-game hit streak (7-for-16) into Monday's game at St. Louis.

He's also at six steals, one back of the major-league lead in that category.

Milwaukee made a seventh-inning charge, closing the deficit to 5-3, but Carroll gave the Diamondbacks separation with a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame. It was the third home run of the season for Carroll, who has six RBI and seven runs scored in 13 games. It was his fourth multi-hit performance of the young season.

Carroll is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers.

Carroll ranks tied for second in the majors with five stolen bases, but unless he's used off the bench, he'll get the chance to rest his legs Monday for the first time all season. With Carroll sitting out, Lourdes Gurriel will step into a starting role in left field.

Carroll is already showing the fantasy-friendly skill set that makes him one of the most exciting young players in baseball, as he is tied for second in the majors with five steals and has swatted two homers through nine games.

There had been some hope that Carroll would quickly take over the leadoff role for the Diamondbacks, but that spot has been occupied by a mix of Josh Rojas, Ketel Marte and Kyle Lewis in the early going. Rojas is up there again Thursday with right-hander Dustin May on the mound for Los Angeles.
