Pennington came in for the injured Ender Inciarte on Monday and went 2-for-3 with an RBI against Anaheim. He played the outfield for the first time this year. Pennington even recorded an outfield assist in the game, although the D-backs will certainly look to others to man the outfield with Inciarte headed to the DL. Pennington hasn't had much success at the plate this year, posting just a .176/.291/.205 line on the year, which has limited him to just 89 plate appearances.

Pennington is in the lineup Sunday. Pennington will fill the place of Chris Owings at second base. It seems like this is a normal day of rest for Owings, so Pennington will likely not start many upcoming games.

Pennington made his first start of the year Wednesday and went 1-for-4 with a double in a 5-2 loss to the Giants. Pennington will be a back up around the infield for the Diamondbacks as they are committed to starting the season using younger players like Nick Ahmed. He was respectable in that role last year in Arizona posting a line of .254/.340/.350 with two homers, six steals, and 21 runs scored. In deep and NL-only leagues he won't kill you off your bench.

Pennington returned to the Diamondbacks' lineup on Friday after being away from the team for a personal matter. He'll likely open the season as a utility infielder for Arizona, unless he's coveted in a trade by another club in need of a versatile depth option. If Pennington sticks in Arizona, Nick Ahmed may be ticketed for Triple-A.

Pennington was scratched from Friday's lineup due to a personal matter, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. No further details were released regarding the personal matter so it is unclear how long he will be out. Pennington batted .254 with two home runs, 21 runs, and 10 RBI on 45 hits over 68 games last season. He spent time playing three infield positions last season, recording eight games at third base, 18 games at second base, and 23 games at shortstop. Pennington had a strong fielding presence last season with 27 double plays and only two errors.

Pennington is the early favorite to break camp as a backup in the middle infield for the Diamondbacks this spring. Nick Ahmed can handle the role if needed, so the D-backs may be in a position to flip Pennington to a club in need of a backup infielder later this spring. Pennington could see an early-season surge of playing time at shortstop if Chris Owings' recovery from shoulder surgery takes longer than expected.

Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart said Tuesday that Pennington will be tendered a contract, Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com reports. Eliminating any doubt as to Pennington's short-term future, Stewart said the 30-year-old will be offered arbitration for 2015. Pennington, a .248/.315/.350 career hitter at the highest level, doesn't get a whole lot of attention in fantasy circles, but his strong defense at the middle infield positions make him a valuable piece for major league teams.
