Meanwhile, Cole has already undergone an MRI and is slated for additional testing on his pitching elbow, and manager Bob Boone acknowledged Monday that the ace is unlike to be ready for the start of the campaign, per Erik Boland of Newsday. Along with Beeter, fellow youngsters Will Warren and Luis Gil are candidates to fill in for Cole if he does indeed need to miss time.

After a hot start at Double-A Somerset, Beeter ran into some problems at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a 4.94 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 71 innings. However, Beeter finished with three earned runs given up across 16 innings in his final three Triple-A starts -- a promising sign for the 25-year-old righty.

The best Triple-A hitters have mostly been promoted to the majors at this stage of the season, but it was still an excellent way for Beeter to close his age-24 season. Beeter's 93-mph fastball (touches 97 mph) and sweeping slider have been an excellent bat-missing duo -- he also sparingly throws quality third and fourth pitches in his curveball and changeup -- but his command and control have held him back at times. At the very least, it would seem Beeter could help a big-league bullpen at some point next season, and he will need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason if the Yankees want to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

Beeter has made five starts for Double-A Somerset so far this season, posting a 1.35 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB over 26.2 innings.

Beeter was acquired by the Yankees in a deal for Joey Gallo last season, and he impressed after joining his new organization, posting a 2.13 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 41:11 K:BB over 25.1 frames. He's carried that success over to 2023 and could move up to Triple-A before long given his early results with Somerset. Beeter has thus far displayed strong strikeout stuff in the minors, though he could help his chances of reaching the majors by cutting down on walks. He's been almost exclusively a starter in the minors but may be more successful out of the bullpen as a big-leaguer.

Beeter was traded from the Dodgers to the Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for Joey Gallo, Pat Ragazzo of SI.com reports.

Beeter has premium stuff but profiles better as a power reliever than as a starter. He has made 18 appearances this year at Double-A and has not gone more than four innings in any one outing, averaging under three innings per appearance (51.2 total innings). The 23-year-old righty has a 5.75 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 36.1 K% and 14.3 BB%. Even with his excellent fastball/curveball combination, he will need to cut down on the walks to be trusted with high-leverage work on a team as flush with bullpen talent as the Yankees.

Beeter has been added to the Dodgers' 60-man player pool, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Beeter was drafted by the Dodgers with the 66th overall pick just this season, so it would be something of a surprise if he makes his big-league debut in 2020. The 21-year-old will likely be nothing more than injury insurance this season.
