Gimenez cleared waivers and was outrighted off the Twins' 40-man roster Monday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Gimenez appeared in 77 games as the Twins' backup catcher in 2017, hitting .220/.350/.382 with seven homers. The 34-year-old can refuse his outright assignment and become a free agent. He won't serve as anything more than a backup wherever he winds up in 2018.

Gimenez is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Yankees, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Despite the success, as a 34-year-old catcher, Gimenez's age is likely preventing him from more consistent playing time behind home plate.

Gimenez also homered Sunday, so the backstop might be kick-starting a hot stretch. While his fantasy value is limited because he doesn't play regularly, Gimenez's .334 wOBA and .767 OPS are decent marks for a catcher.

The journeyman backstop, who is on his third team in as many seasons, has struggled behind starter Jason Castro this season. His batting average is on pace to be his worst since 2011, when he hit .203 with Seattle. On the plus side, the 2004 draft pick is getting on base at a clip of .368, but he's going to have to do more if he wants to earn more consistent playing time for the division-leading Twins.

Gimenez went 1-for-4 wit his first home run of the season in the second game of Sunday's split doubleheader.
