Astros manager Bo Porter confirmed Thursday that Chris Carter will likely start in left field.
That makes J.D. Martinez a roaming fourth outfielder. Carter, 26, hit .239/.350/.514 with 16 home runs in just 67 games last season for the Athletics. He should carry sneaky fantasy value in deeper mixed leagues.

The Astros are considering trying newly acquired first baseman Chris Carter in left field in 2013.
The move would allow the team to keep Carlos Pena at designated hitter and play Brett Wallace at first base while allowing young slugger Nate Freiman to move around. Carter, 26, was acquired from the A's Monday in a five-player trade that sent shortstop Jed Lowrie to Oakland. Carter hit 16 home runs in 218 at-bats in 2012, and a move to left field could give him added position eligibility in fantasy leagues with certain settings.

Astros acquired 1B/DH Chris Carter from the Athletics in a five-player trade.
Carter swings and misses a lot, but he belted 16 homers over just 260 plate appearances last season in Oakland. He should take over as the starting DH with the Astros and would be in line to move to first base in 2014, assuming Carlos Pena doesn't return. Though he'll be in the middle of a woeful lineup, this move is certainly good for his fantasy potential.

Chris Carter went 3-for-5 with a two-run single on Saturday, leading the Athletics to a 9-7 victory over the White Sox in Chicago.
Carter got the A's on the board with a two-run single off Francisco Liriano in a five-run third inning. The 25-year-old has been hugely productive in limited at-bats for the A's this season, hitting .283 with 10 homers and 22 RBI over his first 99 at-bats. He's worthy of a look as a corner infielder in most fantasy leagues.

Chris Carter went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk in the A's 9-8 win over the Angels on Wednesday.
The Angels spread it around today, hitting five homers and scoring in five different innings. The A's, on the other hand, did all of their damage in the second and sixth innings. Carter's homer gave the A's their last two runs and a 9-5 lead, and the team barely held on to win from there. It was Carter's 10th homer in 90 at-bats since his callup.

Pinch-hitter Chris Carter hit a walkoff homer off Steve Delabar as the A's beat the Mariners 4-1 in 11 innings Friday.
The A's knew that sending Carter up to hit for Brandon Moss would cause the Mariners to replace Oliver Perez with Delabar, but they preferred the righty-righty matchup and Carter made it pay off, delivering a three-run blast to left-center. He has three homers in just 12 at-bats since being called up on June 29. While the idea was to play him against lefties, they might want to give him some starts at DH against righties, even though that would weaken the outfield defense by putting Seth Smith in left and sending Coco Crisp to the bench.

Chris Carter smashed his second home run in as many games Saturday but the A's fell to the Rangers.
Carter is receiving regular playing time at first base for the A's, and is grabbing the opportunity by the horns. He's always possessed impressive power, but has struggled to make consistent contact. If he can maintain the contact gains that he displayed at Triple-A, he could be a very useful player in the second half of the season.

Chris Carter homered in his first game back with the Athletics in Friday's loss to the Rangers.
He finished the night 1-for-3 plus a walk and a pair of runs scored. His solo blast off Tanner Scheppers in the ninth inning brought the A's to within one at 4-3, but they couldn't add on another run. It remains to be seen how the playing time will be dished out in Oakland, but if receiving everyday at-bats, Carter's massive power certainly has value in most fantasy leagues.
