Shreve declined an outright assignment to the minors Saturday and elected free agency.

Shreve finished with a 3.20 ERA in 56.1 innings of relief this season, but his peripherals don't support that number very well, as he struck out a career-low 19.1 percent of opposing batters while walking 11.9 percent. Still, as a competent enough lefty reliever, he should be able to find work on the open market.

Shreve (3-3) gave up two runs on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss and a blown save versus the Cubs on Wednesday.

It's the second time in four appearances Shreve has taken a blown save and a loss. The southpaw didn't have his best Friday, and he paid for it by allowing a three-run home run to Didi Gregorius in the seventh inning. He's added eight holds in 53 appearances, but he's rarely seen a truly high-leverage role.

He should be a strong bet to earn a spot on the Pirates' Opening Day roster, and he could immediately seize a key late-inning role.
