Carlos Guillen has announced his retirement. The news comes as a bit of a shock. Guillen agreed to a minor league contract this past winter with the Mariners and had a good chance of claiming a backup infield job this spring in camp. He finishes with 1,331 career hits, 124 career homers and a .285/.355/.443 career batting line. The 36-year-old played for only the Mariners and Tigers during his 14-year major league career.

Carlos Guillen (calf) was cleared to resume taking batting practice Monday in Mariners camp. Guillen sat out the past three days due to mild tightness in his calf. The 36-year-old is aiming to win a spot on Seattle's Opening Day roster as a backup infielder.

Carlos Guillen was held out of practice for the second straight day because of calf tightness. Manager Eric Wedge said he expects Guillen to sit out on Sunday, as well. The 36-year-old can't be counted on as an everyday player anymore, but figures to be useful in a part-time role with the Mariners.

Mariners signed INF Carlos Guillen to a minor league contract. The deal includes a spring training invite. Guillen, who previously played with Seattle from 1998-2003, batted just .232/.265/.368 with three homers, 13 RBI and a .633 OPS over 102 plate appearances last season with the Tigers. The 36-year-old can't be counted on as an everyday player anymore, but the switch-hitter could be a decent bat off the bench.

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes Los Angeles reports that the Royals, Marlins, Twins, Athletics, and Mariners are interested in free agent infielder Carlos Guillen. Guillen batted just .232/.265/.368 over 102 plate appearances this past season for the Tigers and probably can't be counted on for an everyday role at this point with his checkered injury past. The 36-year-old could be a low-risk, potentially moderate reward if he did manage to stay healthy, though.

According to FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi, the Marlins have free agent interest in Carlos Guillen. Guillen has struggled to stay healthy in recent years and batted just .232/.265/.368 over 102 plate appearances this past season for Detroit. But the Marlins are likely viewing him as a decent high-risk, high-reward option for an infield utility role. The Tigers aren't interested in re-signing him.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski acknowledged Tuesday that Carlos Guillen is unlikely to return next season. Guillen batted just .232/.265/.368 in 102 plate appearances this year while earning $13 million. The Tigers are surely excited to have his contract off the books. Magglio Ordonez is also unlikely to return.

Carlos Guillen (calf) could rejoin the Tigers if they advance to the World Series. Guillen has been sidelined since mid-September with a right calf strain. He was held off the ALDS roster and is not playing in the ALCS, but he's making steady progress down in the Tigers' fall instructional league.

Danny Worth, and not Carlos Guillen, replaced Delmon Young (oblique) on the Tigers' ALCS roster because Guillen is still not over his right calf injury. "I think he's going to play all week (in the Florida Instructional League), but that was a non-factor," said manager Jim Leyland. "We were pretty sure he wasn't going to be ready for this series." There might be an outside chance Guillen could be ready for a potential World Series berth, but it's probably safe to rule him out for the year. The injury-prone 36-year-old will be a free agent this offseason.

Carlos Guillen (calf) will not be on the Tigers' ALDS roster. Guillen will travel to Florida to rehab his strained right calf and hopes to feel good enough to join the team for a possible ALCS berth. But, even if he's healthy enough, it's no guarantee he'd be added to the roster. Guillen has already started jogging and will progress with a running program from there.
