Cavalli tossed seven scoreless, no-hit innings for High-A Wilmington on Saturday, striking out 15 and walking two.

The 22-year-old set a new career high for K's in the dominant outing, but big strikeout totals are becoming commonplace for Cavalli as he's fanned double-digit batters in three straight starts and four of his last five. On the season, the 2020 first-round pick has a 1.77 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and eye-popping 71:12 K:BB through 40.2 innings, and it seems that he has little left to prove at this level of the minors.

Cavalii put together a dazzling outing for High-A Wilmington on Wednesday, allowing one hit and three walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

EDGE Analysis

The Nationals' No. 1 fantasy prospect has looked the part in his first two pro starts, as he has yet to give up a run while posting a 15:4 K:BB through 10 innings. Cavalli is already 22 years old, so a quick promotion to Double-A once he's gotten his feet wet makes sense for the 2020 first-round pick if he keeps dominating High-A hitters.

This is a shockingly conservative assignment for the 2020 first-round pick, but the Nats appear to be taking a far more cautious approach with their top pitching prospects than other organizations after a lost minor-league season. Cavalli will join Jackson Rutledge in the Wilmington rotation, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see both get a quick promotion to Double-A if they overmatch opposing hitters. Starting the year three levels from the majors likely rules out both right-handers from making their big-league debuts in 2021, however.

Cavalli topped out at 98 mph with his fastball during his one inning of work in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

The 22-year-old right-hander got himself into a jam, putting runners at first and third with one out, but Cavalli proceeded to fan Khalil Lee and Drew Ferguson to escape the inning. The Nats' first-round pick in 2020 and top fantasy prospect will make his pro debut this season, and Cavalli has the pure stuff to move quickly through the system if he stays healthy and refines his control and command.

The Nationals announced Wednesday that Cavalli would be invited to big-league spring training as a non-roster player.

EDGE Analysis

Cavalli, 22, was nabbed by Washington with the No. 22 overall pick in last year's first-year player draft. Though he has yet to make his professional debut, the right-hander is already widely viewed as Washington's top pitching prospect thanks to his big frame (6-foot-4, 226 pounds) and an advanced repertoire highlighted by a plus slider. Cavalli is not without some risk, however, having missed time during his college career at Oklahoma due to back and arm injuries.

Cavalli has been added to the Nationals' 60-man roster, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Welington Castillo's decision to opt out of playing this season created an opening on the roster, and the Nats elected to use it for developmental purposes. Cavalli, the 22nd overall pick in this year's draft, almost certainly won't make his major-league debut in 2020, but the right-hander will benefit from some major-league coaching.
