Shaw was released by the White Sox on Sunday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran right-hander was informed earlier Sunday he didn't make Chicago's Opening Day roster, so it's no surprise to see him return to free agency. Shaw had 5.40 ERA over 60 appearances last year but pitched solid during spring training with one earned run allowed over 8.1 frames.

The White Sox informed Shaw on Sunday that he won't be included on the Opening Day roster, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw had been attending spring training as a non-roster invitee after signing a minor-league deal with Chicago in February. Given his status as a 35-year-old veteran with 753 career regular-season appearances in the majors along with the fact that he's coming off a respectable showing in Cactus League play (1.08 ERA, 1.32 WHIP in 8.1 innings), Shaw may choose to pursue his options in free agency rather than joining the White Sox's top affiliate at Triple-A Charlotte.

Shaw agreed Wednesday with the White Sox on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to MLB spring training, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 35-year-old right-hander brings a wealth of experience to the table and logged an MLB-leading 81 relief appearances for Cleveland as recently as 2021, but he took a major step back in his final season with the Guardians. Over 58.1 innings in the big leagues, Shaw mustered a 5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB before the Guardians removed him from the 40-man roster in the last week of the regular season. He'll need to show improved form in spring training in order to secure a spot in the White Sox's Opening Day bullpen.

The Guardians outrighted Shaw to Triple-A Columbus on Monday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw is on the books for $3 million in 2022 and is likely eager to receive the remaining prorated portion of his contract, so his decision to accept the outright assignment rather than electing free agency doesn't come as a surprise. Before he was removed from the Guardians' 40-man roster, Shaw turned in a 5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB in 58.1 innings. His contract includes a $4 million club option for 2023, which the Guardians will almost certainly decline this winter.

Shaw was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw made 60 appearances (two starts) for Cleveland in 2022 and converted his lone save chance while picking up seven holds. However, he served mainly as a middle reliever and posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 58.1 innings. It's not yet clear whether he'll remain in the organization if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Shaw (6-2) retired the only batter he faced to earn the win Wednesday over the Tigers.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw ended a threat after James Karinchak left with runners on the corners and two out. The Guardians' offense took over from there, posting a six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Shaw his third win in his last 11 outings. The veteran reliever has allowed eight runs across 14.1 innings in that span, and for the season, he owns a 5.36 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 38:21 K:BB, one save and six holds through 43.2 frames.

Shaw struck out two and threw a scoreless 10th inning to earn the save Thursday against the Tigers.
EDGE Analysis
Emmanuel Clase was unavailable to pitch after taking the mound in four of Cleveland's last five games. That gave Shaw the chance to earn his first save of the season. Shaw has a 5.10 ERA across 42.1 innings this season and has surrendered nine earned runs across his last 14 frames.

Shaw (5-2) struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the win Wednesday over the Tigers.
EDGE Analysis
Starter Aaron Civale lasted four innings in his return from a wrist injury, while Shaw was credited with the win for his clean sixth inning. After allowing multiple runs in his last three appearances in July, Shaw has rebounded to begin August with three consecutive scoreless outings. The veteran reliever has a 5.23 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 34:21 K:BB and six holds across 41.1 innings this year, and his inconsistency has kept him relegated to a low-leverage role.

Shaw allowed two runs on two hits and three walks with one strikeout in two innings against the Rays on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Shaw has made his last two appearances as an opener ahead of Kirk McCarty, to mixed results. Shaw's given up a pair of runs in each of his last three outings and continues to struggle through the middle part of the season. The right-hander owns a 5.63 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 31:20 K:BB through 38.1 innings in 41 appearances. If he continues to function as an opener going forward, the role will reduce his chances of picking up wins and holds.

Shaw is listed as the Guardians' starting pitcher for Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
While making his first start in 733 MLB appearances in Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox, Shaw covered 2.1 innings, so he's likely to work more than a traditional opener while he picks up his second start of the week. Even so, Shaw probably shouldn't be expected to work any more than 3-to-4 innings, so he'll have a tough time qualifying for the win unless the Guardians race out to an early lead and maintain it throughout. Kirk McCarty is the primary option to work in long relief behind Shaw and is a likelier candidate to factor into any decision.
