Not known for his power, Toles took advantage of a hitter-friendly venue (Coors Field) and used Jon Gray's velocity against him to leave the yard for the first time this year. While he isn't expected to hit a bunch of home runs or be a speedster on the basepaths (three homers and one steal in 115 plate appearances last season), the 24-year-old brings value with his contact skills and ability to get on base in front of the Dodgers' sluggers. Andre Ethier's (back) eventual return could create a playing time issue in left field, but until that happens, Toles should continue to lead off against righties.

Apparently, manager Dave Roberts was still trying to decide between Toles and Logan Forsythe for the top spot in the order as of Sunday. Forsythe led off against right-handers throughout most of the spring, but Toles was atop the order for Saturday's exhibition -- the first game all spring in which the Dodgers had their primary eight position players on the field.

Toles is in position to be a left-handed platoon partner in left field along with the right-handed Franklin Gutierrez, Bill Plunkett of the Orange Country Register reports. The 24-year-old went 2-for-4 with a grand slam Saturday against Oakland, raising his spring average to .348.
