Verdugo extended Boston's lead to two with an RBI double off righty Roansy Contreras with one out in the fifth. While the 26-year-old has not hit for power in 2022, he has been much better of late with a .580 slugging percentage in 50 at-bats across his last 15 games. In addition, the outfielder has been red hot at home during that stretch with a 1.226 OPS in 19 at-bats compared to a still strong .916 OPS in 31 at-bats on the road.

Verdugo went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Royals.

This was Verdugo's second straight multi-hit effort after he opened August 1-for-12 in his first four contests. He's up to a .269/.310/.376 slash line with six home runs, 52 RBI, 41 runs scored, a stolen base and 24 doubles through 101 contests. With Jackie Bradley released and Franchy Cordero optioned to Triple-A Worcester, Verdugo should see the bulk of the starts in right field versus right-handed pitchers.

Verdugo is out of the lineup for Thursday's game at Kansas City, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports.

EDGE Analysis

Verdugo started the past 25 games and posted a .603 OPS during that stretch, and he'll take a seat Thursday with southpaw Kris Bubic pitching for the Royals. Jaylin Davis will start in right field and bat leadoff.

Verdugo will start in left field and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Brewers, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

With the Red Sox facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Aaron Ashby) for the second day in a row, the lefty-hitting Verdugo will once again occupy the No. 5 spot in the lineup after having hit either second or third in his prior seven starts. Verdugo has been a solid source of batting average in July (.280), but his counting stats (zero home runs, one stolen base, eight RBI and six runs) over his 25 starts this month have left much to be desired.

Verdugo went 3-for-5 with three RBI in Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Yankees.

Verdugo knocked in the game-tying run with an eighth-inning single, then drove home two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning for a walkoff win. These were the first runs driven in during the month of July for Verdugo, who ranks third on the Red Sox with 46 RBI.
