Avila is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
The Diamondbacks have handed each of their three catchers a start behind the plate in their first series of the second half, which will keep Avila on the bench for the second game in a row. Jeff Mathis will handle the catching duties with his regular batterymate, Zack Greinke, on the mound Sunday.

Avila is not starting Saturday against the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
The Diamondbacks have rotated their catchers heavily all season and will continue to do so. Avila, Jeff Mathis and John Ryan Murphy (who starts Saturday) have now each started 33 games behind the plate.

Avila will start at catcher and bat eighth Sunday against the Braves.
EDGE Analysis
Avila will be behind the plate for the third time in five games, signaling that he may have emerged as the Diamondbacks' preferred option in three-headed catching timeshare. After inking a two-year deal this winter, Avila has been a major disappointment with a .149/.276/.272 batting line across 134 plate appearances, but he's performed more respectably in a small sample of four games since returning from the 10-day disabled list earlier this month. Over those contests, Avila has gone 4-for-9 with a home run and three walks.

Avila is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres.
EDGE Analysis
The backstop returned from the 10-day disabled list Saturday in impressive fashion, starting behind the plate and finishing 3-for-3 with a home run, a walk and three RBI. It was easily the best performance of the season from Avila, who has recorded multiple hits in just other games and is slashing .148/.270/.269 across 126 plate appearances. The glacially slow start to the season will confine Avila to a timeshare behind the plate with John Ryan Murphy and Jeff Mathis for now, but Avila could re-emerge as the primary catcher if he recaptures the offensive form that helped him record a .834 OPS in 2017.

Avila (hamstring) was activated off the 10-day disabled list Saturday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Manager Torey Lovullo indicated Wednesday that Avila's return from the disabled list was "imminent," so the move isn't surprising. The 31-year-old is unlikely to see significant starting opportunities with John Ryan Murphy and Jeff Mathis currently healthy.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Avila (hamstring) has resumed participating in all baseball activities, Katherine Fitzgerald and Atreya Verma of The Arizona Republic report.
EDGE Analysis
At this point, Avila isn't limited by the strained right hamstring that forced him to the disabled list June 27 and is simply building up endurance again. Lovullo didn't offer a firm target date for Avila's activation from the DL, other than calling the catcher's return "imminent." Once he rejoins the big club, Avila may have to settle for only a couple of starts per week with John Ryan Murphy and Jeff Mathis both set to retain roles in the Diamondbacks' catching timeshare.

Avila was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Avila has had an awful season for the Diamondbacks this year, hitting just .124/.240/.219. It's unclear if the hamstring issue is something which he battled throughout that time or if it's something new. The move makes room for the return of Robbie Ray (oblique) from the disabled list.

Avila went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI in a 9-3 win over the Pirates on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
It was just the second multi-hit performance on the year for Avila, whose average is still in the gutters at .124. The 31-year-old backstop is up to three home runs and seven RBI in 105 at-bats. He's essentially a non-threat at the plate at this point.

Avila went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Mets.
EDGE Analysis
Avila has recorded three hits in 55 at-bats since the beginning of May, shrinking his average to .109 for the season. That's the lowest mark of any player with at least 100 plate appearances, with Avila's 45.7 strikeout percentage also representing the highest rate among that group. Avila's two-year, $8.25 million pact with Arizona will likely lock him into a roster spot all season despite his immense struggles, but he won't unseat John Ryan Murphy as the club's primary catcher anytime soon.

Avila was informed after the Diamondbacks' 7-4 loss to the Reds on Wednesday that he would be benched more frequently in favor of John Ryan Murphy, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.
EDGE Analysis
As recently as Tuesday, manager Torey Lovullo suggested that he planned to stick with Avila as the club's primary catcher, but that changed after Murphy bolstered his case for more playing time by going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double. It's somewhat surprising that it took nearly two months for Lovullo to commit to Murphy, whose .908 OPS through 79 plate appearances this season nearly matches Avila's (.525) and fellow backstop Jeff Mathis' (.525) combined production. Given his career-long reputation as a light-hitting, defense-first catcher, Mathis' contributions aren't unexpected, but Avila has been a tremendous disappointment after posting an .834 OPS in 2017, which netted him a two-year, $8.25 million deal this offseason. With regular starts no longer headed his way, Avila looks like a reasonable drop even in most two-catcher mixed leagues or NL-only formats.
