He's gone 14-for-36 with eight extra-base hits, five RBI and six runs scored through eight games.

Jones is in the lineup Wednesday against the Padres, starting in right field and leading off.

Manager Torey Lovullo had indicated that Jones could get a rest Wednesday for the final game of the road trip, but it seems Jones talked his way into the lineup. The 33-year-old is off to an excellent start to the season with 11 hits (including three homers) in his first 29 at-bats. This marks his third consecutive game leading off (all against opposing lefties).

He'll come down to earth from those lofty numbers as he logs more at-bats, but Jones is at least showing early signs he can still swing that bat at age 33 coming off a down 2018 with Baltimore that saw him miss the 20-homer benchmark for the first time since 2010.

Jones went from unemployed two weeks ago to Arizona's everyday right fielder Opening Day. Steven Souza's knee injury created an opportunity for Jones to be more than three-position backup in the outfield. Whether he stays in the leadoff spot remains to be seen, but the Souza injury puts him in position to get 550-600 plate appearances.

Jones is leading off and starting in right field Thursday against the Dodgers.

EDGE Analysis

With Steven Souza (knee) done for the year, we knew Jones would see an uptick in playing time and now it is clear he will lead off against southpaws in the early going. If he plays every day and leads off against lefties, he could accumulate enough counting stats to be relevant in most formats.
