Not sure if anyone has been paying attention to those pesky bars at the top and sides of the page, but to those who have, is it not quite disturbing to see ads for gaydar.net?
This is what FleaFlicker says about ads in the Privacy tab at the bottom:
"Ads appearing on any of our websites may be delivered to users by advertising partners, who may set cookies. These cookies allow the ad server to recognize your computer each time they send you an online advertisement to compile information about you or others who use your computer. This information allows ad networks to, among other things, deliver targeted advertisements that they believe will be of most interest to you. This Privacy Policy covers the use of cookies by Fleaflicker and does not cover the use of cookies by any advertisers."
So i guess I've been profiled by ad agencies as a gay man looking for an insurance quote and online dating.
I post on an independant football message board and from what I noticed on that site is if you talk about something the cookies or whatever will start showing ads about what you said..
Like one time I was talking about where im from and then all of the sudden there were ads about SD..
It is really not ad overkill. Banners and stuff dont and shouldnt bother anyone as long as there are no floating banners or pop-up videos. FF dont worry about this ish.
Ads pay for the site, thus making it free, FF is moving to better waters thus needs some income to make up for this, no different when you are on facebook. Doubt they are using a server like them that does do the profile ads.

Our ads are currently coming from Google's AdSense program.
We can filter out any ads we don't want to serve but Google has lots filters in place to block offensive or inappropriate content.

Ahhh, that makes sense. Must save a lot of time doing that than having to respond to individual ad requests.

the advertising choices for this site have been puzzling.
for example, the dating ad banner at the top that features all male photos.
i would think the majority of fleaflicker's users are guys, especially since football is the site's most popular sport.
i don't know the exact demographics but i'd be willing to say it's about 80/20.
with that breakdown i would expect to see more ads for beer & movies featuring hot actresses

I dont mind the flash ads on the top of the page but I wish they'd get rid of the ad choices on the side of the page under our league logos.
I know it pays for the site so whatever but if you ask me its kind of an ad overkill.

Who looks at internet ads anyway?!?!?!?
deenThu 7/7/11 6:01 PM
Well I guess you have your opinion and I have mine..
Your right who looks at them anyways? The point is I can still see the ad overkill even if I dont click on the ads.
Mr-KevinSun 7/10/11 12:00 PM
Wait... i just realized there is not a single banner or ad on my fleaflicker homepage... thats weird
darksideofozThu 7/21/11 9:06 PM
yeah, the technology has been around for many years. not sure why people look at ads.

Haven't seen that one, but maybe the ads are targeted via profile?
HattoriHanzoMon 7/4/11 9:52 PM
you mean like cookies? I think fleaflicker controls what ads sponsor the site...
