Pretty sure the 49ers will make the playoffs (even if it's just from winning the division)... but, as Doe said, Smith is what he is. He has a hard time getting passes down the field with any amount of success. I do think the upgrade at WR will be apparent in his stats though.
Alex Smith is pretty risky. Alex Smith already used his breakout year for last year and I personally doubt he can repeat, but I may be wrong since they added WR's Mario Manningham and Randy Moss but like you mentioned TB added VJAX. Josh Freeman never had a breakout year yet so this may be his year.

We like Freeman better. More downfield potential. Resurrection of a year plus VJax.

Fairly equal this year, but I see more offensive opportunities for Smith in 2012.

Alex smith is a bumb 1 decent year does not erase all the bad ones. they wont make the playoffs watch.
