Potter was reassigned to AHL Adirondack on Wednesday, Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald reports.

Potter had yet to log a single appearance with the Flames this season across two different stints. With no indication that he'd break into the lineup in the near future, the Flames elected to send him back to the minors, where he'll be able to pick up some more consistent ice time.

Potter was sent back to the AHL Tuesday, but was recalled again Thursday, likely indicating Ladislav Smid isn't ready to return. It also could could signify that one of the six blueliners on the active roster are dealing with an injury or illness. Regardless, Potter will take his spot back with the Flames, though it probably won't be for an extended period of time.

The placement of Ladislav Smid (upper body) on injured reserve will open up a roster spot for Potter, who the Flames had assigned to Adirondack in later October after his recovery from shoulder surgery knocked him out of training camp. He's expected to serve as a seventh defenseman during his stay with the Flames, as Smid's lineup spot will more than likely go to Raphael Diaz.

Potter has been brought along slowly after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery, but it appears he is ready for game action. The Flames did not have a spot for him on their roster, so they decided to assign him to AHL Adirondack to get in some ice time. He could be called up to Calgary again at some point this season.

Potter won't officially count as a member of the 23-man roster, and there's a good chance the Flames will send him to the minors once he's deemed healthy. The 30-year-old blue liner appeared in 19 games for the Oilers and Bruins last season, tallying no goals and five assists.

Potter is hoping to nab one of the final blue line spots available in Calgary, as the first five spots are pretty much locked down. Potter played sparingly with Edmonton and Boston last season, but the Flames like his game.

Potter put up five assists in 19 games between the Oilers and Bruins in 2013. He's a gritty defender that has a shot at making the roster in the fall.
