Flyers prospect Eric Wellwood said his main goal is to walk again after suffering major tendon and ligament damage when his lower leg was cut by a skate. Wellwood got the cast off his leg Thursday and officially began rehab on the injury, which occurred during an April 7 game with the Flyers' AHL affiliate. Although Wellwood hopes to play hockey again, he said his main goal is simply to be able to walk. Wellwood said doctors had never seen an injury of this nature before, meaning there's no real timetable for his recovery. It could be quite a while before he returns to the ice.

Eric Wellwood sustained a cut his lower leg after it was slashed by his own skate Sunday in an AHL contest with Adirondack. The incident occurred when he fell into the boards, but according to his older brother Kyle, who plays for the Winnipeg Jets, Eric is doing well. "He's doing fine. He's talking, even skated off the ice under his own power," said Kyle. "He had his first surgery to sew up his artery and there are a couple of tendons that are cut, so he's going to have to have a second surgery with a specialist." We wish him the best in his recovery.

Eric Wellwood has been sent down by the Philadelphia Flyers. That opens the door for the Flyers to activate Daniel Briere (wrist) off the injured reserve list. Wellwood has no points in four games with Philadelphia this season.

Eric Wellwood served as a healthy scratch for three straight games last week in AHL Adirondack. "The fact that he played games last year, well, really, that's last year," said Phantoms coach Terry Murray, who was sending a message to his player to wake up. "You've got to come back and do it all over again this year. That's the way pro hockey works." Wellwood returned to the lineup on Wednesday in a 3-2 loss to St. John's, but he held pointless. He has collected one goal and four assists in 14 games this season.

Eric Wellwood was projected to earn a permanent spot with Philadelphia this season, but the lockout has forced him to remain in the minors for now. "I think it's been a challenge, not just for me but almost every young guy who's in the American League and wants to go back," he said about the situation. "A lot of guys have trouble with that. They had expectations of playing [in the NHL], and now they're down here. It's definitely a challenge, but you're here to play hockey, and you play your heart out." Wellwood appeared in 24 games with the Flyers last season, where he had nine points, and in 11 playoff contests.

Eric Wellwood, who was called up for a fourth time this season on Saturday, scored the only goal in Philadelphia's 1-0 win over Washington Sunday night. Wellwood has been trying to crack the Flyers' lineup for two seasons and this evening's goal is certainly going to help him in that regard. The foot injury to James van Riemsdyk could mean an extended stay in the NHL for Wellwood. Keep an eye on him. Pavel Kubina and Matt Carle registered assists on Wellwood's second goal of the campaign.

The Philadelphia Flyers have called up Eric Wellwood. This is the fourth time Wellwood has been promoted in 2011-12, but this time he could be up for a while. With James van Riemsdyk (foot) expected to miss the remainder of the regular season, Wellwood has an opportunity to stick with the club. He has a goal and three points in five games with Philadelphia this season.
