Mikael Samuelsson RW DET 3 Months

No one claimed Mikael Samuelsson after the Detroit Red Wings decided to send him to the AHL. He's with Grand Rapids as of Sunday.

No big surprise, as he's been either injured, inconsistent or both this season. He only has three points in 26 GP and doesn't really have any peripheral value beyond that.

The Detroit Red Wings' Mikael Samuelsson, who was a healthy scratch on Thursday, admitted that his confidence is down.

He has three points in 21 games this season. "That's what I need most of all," Samuelsson said, referring to confidence. "You can say, 'Oh yeah, you have to skate faster, you've got to battle harder.' Yeah, absolutely. I haven't played my best hockey. But it has its reasons too, but I don't want to comment on that. I just have to take it one day at a time." Is his confidence down? "Right now? Yeah, it is," he said. "No question about it."

Mikael Samuelsson is healthy and playing well for the Detroit Red Wings.

Samuelsson had a real tough season in 2012-13 as he managed to play in only four games. He likely would have been bought out in the off-season had he been healthy but the new CBA does not allow teams to buy out injured players so Samuelsson was spared. He scored in the opener and could be a nice and unexpected contributor to the Red Wings this season. We do not recommend him at this time but take a wait-and-see approach for the veteran.

Mikael Samuelsson scored Detroit's first goal of the season in Wednesday's win against Buffalo.

He played on the team's fourth line and logged just 8:27 of ice time, but that didn't stop him from contributing to the Wings' 2-1 victory. Cory Emmerton, who cleared waivers prior to the start of the season, picked up an assist on Samuelsson's marker.
