Konopka has signed a contract with KH Sanok of Poland, the Toronto Sun reports. Konopka failed to land an NHL contract during the offseason with the specter of a 20-game ban for violating the league's performance-enhancing substances program hanging over his head. Even if he hadn't run afoul of league rules, Konopka likely wouldn't have generated much interest due to his minimal offensive production over 346 career games. It's possible he stays overseas for the remainder of his career.

NHL sources are reporting Zenon Konopka violated the league drug policy for taking DHEA, an over-the-counter supplement recommended to him by non-team doctors. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone that comes from the adrenal gland, which is just above the kidneys. DHEA supplements are used to build muscle, fight the effects of aging, provide energy and improve mood and memory amongst other health benefits. Konopka was suspended for 20 games on Thursday for violating the terms of the league's Performance Enhancing Substances Program.

Zenon Konopka has issued an apology after being suspended for 20 games for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. "I apologize to my teammates and to the Buffalo Sabres organization, as well as to my friends and family," he said in a statement through the NHLPA. "I have learned a great deal from this experience, something I hope to be able to share with younger players. I will accept this suspension and continue to work hard to prepare for the 2014-15 season." He said he ingested an over-the-counter product and he didn't know that it contained a substance that violated the program. Konopka said he didn't take it in order to enhance his athletic performance.

Zenon Konopka has been handed a 20-game suspension for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. Konopka is an unrestricted free agent, so his suspension will start when he reaches a new deal. He skated in 59 games with the Minnesota Wild and Buffalo Sabres last season, where he totaled three points and 88 penalty minutes.

Zenon Konopka underwent finger surgery during the Olympic break. Konopka should still be good to return before the March 5 trade deadline. The Sabres will presumably shop him, but we doubt he'll attract much attention. Buffalo got him in January after Minnesota placed him on waivers.

Don't be surprised if Zenon Konopka is a healthy scratch Wednesday against Toronto. He was in the penalty box for both of Philadelphia's goals in a 4-3 loss on Tuesday. "You don't take foolish penalties when the score's tied, 2-2, and give them the go-ahead goal," interim coach Ted Nolan said referring to Konopka's goaltender inference infraction at the 15:06 mark of the third period.
