DAILY PRIME - FEBRUARY 17, 2014: STEVE'S OLYMPIC THOUGHTS WITH A FA... primepucks.com Mon 2/17/14 3:13 PM

Obviously, the top injury news during the first round of Olympic hockey that has many fantasy owners deflated is Sweden's Henrik Zetterberg missing the remainder of the games due to a herniated disc in his back. According to Swedish team doctor, Bjorn Waldenback, there are fears that he might be gone for the rest of the season. Zetterberg has been the main source of offensive production and a solid fantasy forward for the Red Wings, so his absence would adversely affect the fantasy values of all key Detroit players moving forward. Rookie Finnish sensation Aleksander Barkov is also out for the remainder of the Olympics and quite possibly the season after suffering a knee injury in the game against Norway. His 24 points in 54 games aren't staggering totals, but he been coming on of late and was getting a huge confidence boost by playing on Finland's top line along with Teemu Selanne and Mikael Granlund. Don't forget Barkov in your drafts next season, as he makes for a great late-round sleeper. I would be a little concerned if I was counting on Jaroslav Halak as my top fantasy goalie down the stretch, considering how he has been lit up in two games starting for Team Slovakia. I understand being ransacked by a juggernaut USA team, but being beat twice by Slovenian forwards not named Anze Kopitar? Inexcusable. It might be time to sound the fantasy alarm. Two players that could wake up after the NHL season resumes are Daniel Sedin and Drew Doughty. I would consider buying low on both, as they have been having much better Olympic tournaments than NHL seasons so far. Sedin has only 2 points in the last 15 games for Vancouver, but he has dished out three assists for Team Sweden. With brother Henrik also returning, it would be hard to imagine that Daniel doesn't turn it around during the last 20 games. As for Drew, he has scored 4 goals for Team Canada which should spark him as he helps lead the Kings to another long playoff run. Doughty epitomizes the pure definition of "clutch", so his numbers drastically improve when the games matter the most.

SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE - 2/2/2014 primepucks.com Sun 2/2/14 10:35 AM

Happy Super Bowl Sunday & Happy Groundhog Day! Wow, a double shot!  Need lots of coffee today! Steve Mason had 2 shutouts this week! He had also signed a contract extension recently.  I guess he likes playing in Philadelphia. Semyon Varlamov also signed an extension, He also is having a great season.  I guess goaltenders signing contract extensions in the middle of a season doesn't affect their performance like when a forward signs an extension. Wayne Simmonds is so under-rated. He really is. It's a shame what's going on with Edmonton again this year. When??? Ryan Callahan isn't going anywhere. Please. Jarome Iginla has always been a second half player. Always. Did David Krejci turn it up a notch this week or what? Torey Krug with another PP goal. This kid is amazing. At least Taylor Hall came to play yesterday. Carey Price deserved a 1-0 shutout victory over Tampa Bay instead of a 2-1 overtime loss. Subban had part in two goals in that game. One, a tipped pass between two Lightning players past Price.   And the other, an assist on the tying goal.  A game I think he would rather forget about. Buffalo got buried by the Avalanche yesterday, 7-1. They haven't been that bad all year long even thought they are bad. Nathan MacKinnon had some game. A goal, 2 assists, +3, 4 SOG, 1 BS, 1 HT and 8/12 faceoff wins. Kessel with the hat trick and assist. This is the Kessel the Leafs need. Kadri & Lupul. Lupul & Kadri. They keep this up and they will get a nickname like, Kadpul.  Ewwww! Now you see how important Tyler Bozak is to the Leafs offense. Columbus is not going to go away. They have arrived in the East. Writing Blue Jackets all the time is tough on writers who look for witty shortcuts or catchy monikers, but in this case, I would be wise to stick to Blue Jackets otherwise I might hear some complaints. Why couldn't they be called Yellow Jackets? With Nathan Horton being a main cog in the Columbus offense, Marian Gaborik's days may be short and few. Bobrovsky, last year's Vezina winner, has been playing great, but not "lights out" like last year's run. If Nashville can get a little closer in the Western Conference playoff race, and Rinne comes back after the Olympics, they may have a chance, which would be an amazing feat IMHO. Another team that is hanging around even though their starting goaltender has been anything but his usual self this year is the Phoenix Coyotes. Maybe Greiss getting 2 starts in a row will awaken the slumbering giant. The Calgary ...

Injury: Mikael Granlund's much-anticipated return to the Wild's lin... dailyfaceoff.com Sun 12/22/13 7:56 PM

Granlund has missed 11 straight games and 13 of the past 14. In those 14 games, the Wild has scored 22 goals. It is not easy returning immediately from a concussion. "We'll be realistic with our expectations, but I think there's no better way of getting right back in there than to throw him back into the fire," Yeo said.

Granlund, who has been skating on his own, is skating with extra forwards Justin Fontaine and Mike Rupp, which also indicated that Mike Yeo will return with the same lineup as the Colorado win on Tuesday against the red-hot Vancouver Canucks. Including the Phoenix game that Granlund skated 29 seconds in, the Wild is 5-6-1 without Granlund with 18 goals scored (1.5 goals per game).I'd still be surprised if Granlund plays in any of the next few games just because of his history of concussions, but at the very least, maybe he'll now come on the upcoming road trip to practice.

It sounds like Granlund must have had symptoms working out or after he got on the ice on his own Monday. "We're going to keep him off right now," coach Mike Yeo said. "He skated the other day and we're at the point now where lets just take some time off here and make sure we get this right. ... I just know that we're not making progress, and so what we're doing right now, we have to take a different approach."

Granlund has been hit hard recently - courtesy of Nazem Kadri, Marc Methot, and Connor Murphy. Hopefully the time to recover will allow Granlund to get his game back. Brodziak may get more opportunity because of the Granlund injury but you can find better options on the waiver wire.

Granlund missed the last two games with an upper-body injury but should be back in the lineup tonight and skate with Nino Niederreiter and Jason Pominville. Granlund has two goals and 10 assists as he continues to progress his game in the NHL. The Finnish phenom has more value in keeper leagues, but is still relevant in deep one-year leagues.

Injury: Granlund (upper-body) is not expected to play tonight. dailyfaceoff.com Mon 11/25/13 2:56 PM

Granlund did not skate on Sunday or this morning after missing Saturday's contest with the Jets. The Finnish centre has two goals and 10 assists in 23 games. Mike Rupp will make his season debut tonight with Granlund out.
