Matt Stajan (personal) was back at practice on Monday. It was his first time on the ice with his teammates since the death of his newborn son. Stajan has missed Calgary's last eight games, but his return suggests he could be ready to return to the lineup on Tuesday night.

The Calgary Flames explained that Matt Stajan and his family have been grieving the loss of their son Emerson, who died on March 3. Awful news for the Flames forward. No timetable was provided regarding when he might return, for understandable reasons.

Matt Stajan scored Calgary's only goal in a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia Saturday. He scored late in the third period to give the Flames hope of a comeback, but they couldn't get the equalizer. Stajan has 10 goals and 23 points in 50 games this year. T.J. Galiardi and Joe Colborne picked up assists in Saturday's loss.

That was part of his motivation for signing a four-year, $12.5 million extension.

Stajan has played with the Flames since being acquired from Toronto, as part of the Dion Phaneuf trade, during the 2009-10 campaign.

Matt Stajan doesn't think David Backes was out to hurt him when he delivered a knee-on-knee hit during Monday's game. "He sent me a text to see if I was OK, which was nice of him," said Stajan. "I don't think there was any intent. It's a reaction play. A bang-bang play, he was trying to hit me and I tried to dodge the hit and his leg came through. That happens a lot. I never thought there was any intent, I just was frustrated at the time with the way it went down, in the heat of the moment." Stajan ended up rejoining the Flames for their following game on Friday. That's not the only big blow he's taken recently, but he hasn't missed a contest as a result of them and claims to feel okay.

Matt Stajan says he's fine to play Friday after he took a knee-on-knee hit from St. Louis' David Backes on Monday. He left the game in overtime after the collision, but it sounds like he'll be available for Friday's game versus Edmonton. It's probably safe to keep him active if you normally would. Stajan has six goals and 16 points in 29 games.
