In a statement released by the Blackhawks on Tuesday, Toews said "This offseason, I've been experiencing symptoms that have left me feeling drained and lethargic. I am working with doctors so I can better understand my condition. Until I can get my health back to a place where I feel I can perform at an elite level and help my team, I will not be joining the Blackhawks for training camp. I do not have a timetable for when I will rejoin the team."

Although details are sparse, Toews' statement would seem to suggest that he and his doctors are still working to determine the specific nature of his condition, indicating he won't be back on the ice anytime soon. At this point it's impossible to say when Toews may be ready to return, so fantasy managers considering him on draft day should take the fact that he may miss, at a minimum, a large portion of the shortened 2020-21 campaign into consideration.

According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, Toews will miss the entirety of training camp and the start of the regular season with an illness.

The hits just keep on coming for the Blackhawks, who will now be without Alexander Nylander (knee) and Kirby Dach (wrist) for most of, if not the entirety of the 2020-21 campaign, and without Toews for the start of the regular season at a minimum. At this point the specific nature of Toews' illness remains unclear, but Chicago should release more details in the near future. For now, it sounds like he may only be in danger of missing a handful of games, which shouldn't impact his draft stock much.

Toews was the master of the deflection Wednesday, as his first goal, a power-play tally, bounced off his skate in the dying seconds of the first period. He then deflected the game-winner off his shin with 1:16 left in the third. The Blackhawks' captain has been a big part of their success in the series, with four goals and an assist through three games.

Toews scored two goals and added an assist, and dominated Connor McDavid in the face-off circle in Chicago's 6-4 win over Edmonton in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers on Saturday.

Captain Serious was at his postseason best. He won 16-of-25 face-offs while McDavid went 4-for-12. Toews was instrumental in helping rookie line mate Dominik Kubalik set an NHL record for most points in his postseason debut (five). It remains to be seen if Toews and company are in the Oilers' heads just yet, but a Game 1 win is often a predictor of success in a five-game series.

Toews exited Monday's on-ice session early and hadn't practiced since, but Blackhawks fans and those who drafted him in playoff pools can both breath a sigh of relief, as Captain Serious appears to be no worse for wear. He'll center Chicago's first line and top power-play unit against the Oilers during the qualifying round.

If he does miss any game action, Dylan Strome could find himself getting promoted to the No. 1 line.

The 31-year-old pivot isn't getting any younger, but it's safe to assume he has at least a few seasons of high-level play left in the tank.
