Mitchell (head) could play Thursday against the Senators. Mitchell has been dealing with migraines the last several weeks, but he has been cleared to play by team doctors, and could take the ice as soon as Thursday. Mitchell should play soon if he does not Thursday, but expect an update on his status whenever he officially comes off injured reserve.

Mitchell (migraines) skated at practice on Wednesday and is feeling better but according to head coach Patrick Roy, Mitchell is unlikely to play in Colorado's season opener and may miss time beyond that, Adrian Dater of The Denver Post reports. Mitchell notched a career high in assists and points last season and is expected to be on the third line this year. Unless there is an injury, Mitchell will not be a top-six player for Colorado or see much power-play time. Mitchell is generally used for non-fantasy situations like killing penalties so his fantasy value is not very high but he could be a good choice in deeper leagues.

Mitchell's participation in training camp could be limited in the early going while he deals with migraines, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports. The Avalanche have already announced that the migraines aren't related to the Apr. 11 concussion the center suffered, knocking him out of the remainder of the postseason. While that sounds like a bit of fortunate news, Mitchell could still be held out of the team's first few preseason games as a precaution. Mitchell is likely poised to open the regular season as the team's third-line center.

John Mitchell (concussion) might be able to return before the end of the first round. Of course, given that it's a concussion we're talking about, any timetable needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Mitchell wasn't able to participate in Colorado's final two games of the regular season.

John Mitchell did not play Friday night against the Sharks. He was experiencing headaches which the Avs' coaching staff are concerned may be concussion-like in nature. For now reserve Mitchell and consider him day-to-day.

As initially speculated, John Mitchell will get elevated into a top-six role with the Avalanche. However, he will start out on the wing alongside Paul Stastny and Gabriel Landeskog. He played between Ryan O'Reilly and Jamie McGinn when Matt Duchene was injured on Saturday, but that spot will be occupied by Nathan MacKinnon.
