Crabb (illness) tested positive for the mumps Monday, ESPN.com reports. Will Rangers forward Lee Stempniak also diagnosed with the mumps, that makes 18 players who have acquired the virus at some point this season. Crabb, who has spent the entire season in the AHL, is the first known player at that league level to have picked up the mumps, prompting the Hartford affiliate to go on high alert. Crabb will remain away from the team until doctors determine he's no longer contagious.

Crabb is being isolated from his teammates at AHL Hartford on Thursday and will be evaluated for the mumps virus. Acquired from the Panthers near the end of training camp, Crabb has spent all season with Hartford, where he's produced seven points in 22 games. The mumps outbreak hasn't hit the minor leagues to the same extent it has in the NHL, but the organization obviously wants to take every precaution against further contamination if Crabb is confirmed to have the virus.

The Rangers acquired Crabb from the Panthers on Monday. The Rangers sent Steven Kampfer and Andrew Yogan back to Florida, and the move opens up room for Anthony Duclair on the team's roster. Crabb is expected to spend most of the season with AHL Hartford.

Crabb was waived by the Panthers on Sunday, Harvey Fialkov of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. Crabb is expected to clear waivers and report to AHL San Antonio, where he totaled 15 goals and 14 assists over 62 games. He appeared in nine games with the Panthers last season and could be up again at some point in 2014-15 if the team is need of depth on the fourth line.
