Petry signed a six-year contract with the Canadiens on Tuesday.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin stated that re-signing Petry would be an offseason priority in mid-May. Today's news has proven Bergevin is a man of his word, as the Canadiens now have Petry locked up through the 2020-21 season. The 27-year-old defenseman tallied 22 points this season, seven of which came in the 19 regular-season games he played in a Canadiens uniform after being dealt by the Oilers in early March. Petry also registered three points in his 12 playoff appearances with Montreal this season, averaging 22:17 of ice time per contest. He'll likely continue to play with Alexei Emelin as part of the Habs' second pairing next season.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said re-signing Petry will be an offseason priority, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.

Bergevin has been pretty open about the team's plans, as he also said the Habs won't re-sign Sergei Gonchar, Mike Weaver and Manny Malhotra. Petry joined the team in a late-season trade with the Oilers, notching seven points (three goals) over 19 regular-season games in a Canadiens uniform. He then had three points in 12 playoff appearances, averaging 22:17 of ice time per contest.

Petry potted his first goal of the playoffs in Sunday's Game 2 loss to the Lightning.

The goal -- Petry's first career playoff point -- gave the Habs an early lead, but the Bolts stormed back with the next five goals to take a 2-0 series lead. The defenseman went on a six-game point streak toward the end of the regular season, but is not generally a reliable source to fill out the scoresheet.

Petry scored a goal and had the only assist on Lars Eller's game-winner in overtime Thursday against Detroit.

After initially not doing anything offensively following his trade to Montreal, Petry's suddenly lit aflame, putting together an out-of-nowhere six-game point streak. You can't count on it to continue, but this outburst should be in the back of fantasy owners' minds come next year's drafts.

Petry scored a goal in Friday night's 3-2 shootout loss to the Devils. He's scored in three straight games and has points in four straight.

Since a horrible minus-4 night against Winnipeg, Petry has generated this four-game burst of offense and played better defense.

Petry netted his fifth goal of the season in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Lightning.

Petry has been struggling to work his way onto the scoresheet since being acquired by the Canadiens just before the trade deadline --failing to register a point in his first 12 games in Montreal -- but he's now recorded a point in each of his last two. The goal ends an even longer drought dating back to Jan. 9 and brings him within a point of matching last season's total output of 17 points.

Petry (illness) will return to the lineup Saturday against the Sharks, Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette reports.

After sitting out Thursday's win over the Hurricanes with the illness, Petry was back at practice Friday and participated fully during Saturday's morning skate. With the defenseman showing no limitations during either of those sessions, he'll reclaim a spot on the third pairing next to Tom Gilbert.

Coach Michel Therrien said that Petry (illness) is doubtful to play Thursday against the Hurricanes.

Petry missed the Habs' morning skate after coming down with the flu, and it appears the team is content to let him take the night off and pick up some rest. His next chance to play will come Saturday against the Sharks.

Petry (flu) was not at practice Thursday.

It's unclear if Petry will bounce back in time for Thursday night's game against the Hurricanes, but with zero points and two PIM in nine games since joining the Habs, he's off the fantasy radar in most formats.
