Giguere will announce his retirement from the NHL next week, Elliot Teaford of the Daily Breeze reports. Giguere's last start came in the season finale for Avs, saving 33 of 36 shots. He has had a long NHL career, first starting in the NHL in the 1996-97 season. His best seasons came with the Ducks, including a playoff MVP performance in the 2002-03 season. Giguere was a free agent in the offseason, and rather than look for a contract for another season likely serving as a backup, the 37-year-old goaltender will hang up his skates.

Colorado goalie Giguere turned in a strong game in what likely was his final NHL regular-season appearance. Giguere stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced in Anaheim before the Ducks prevailed 3-2 in overtime. Giguere, who won a Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007, got a loud ovation and waved to the season-high crowd of 17,528 when he was recognized during a first-period timeout. As Semyon Varlamov's backup this season, Giguere produced a record of 11-6-1 in 2013-14. He also winds up with a GAA of 2.62 and a save percentage of .913.

Colorado wants Reto Berra to serve as the team's backup next season, so Jean-Sebastien Giguere won't be retained. He'll be an unrestricted free agent this summer and there's been plenty of speculation that he'll retire. You could choose to be bitter and cranky, or you could choose to be a professional and enjoy the time you have left. I want to take it day to day and make the most of it," Giguere said. "It's not (Berra's) fault, and it's not my fault. It's just the way it is. He's a great guy, so I have nothing bad to say about him." The veteran netminder will serve as Colorado's backup during the playoffs.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere is slated to start next Tuesday's match against the Montreal Canadiens. The Montreal native is apparently leaning toward retiring at the end of this season. He's still expected to serve as Colorado's number two netminder for the remainder of the year despite Reto Berra's presence on the roster.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere is leaning towards retiring after the 2013-14 campaign. That's probably one of the main reasons why Colorado acquired Reto Berra at the trade deadline. Giguere won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2003 and Stanley Cup in 2007. He has a 261-215-74 record, 2.53 GAA, and .913 save percentage in 592 career games.
