Red Wings general manager Ken Holland tried to dump Kindl and his $2.4 million annual cap hit via the waiver process on two separate occasions this season but was unsuccessful. Going the trade route might not have been the ideal scenario for the Wings given the 15-percent salary retainer, but sending Kindl to Florida still clears some cap space for the club ahead of the Feb. 29 trade deadline.
